Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium that belongs to the family Chlamydiaceae. The bacterium is transmitted through direct contact with infected tissue, including during sexual activity, and can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth, leading to neonatal infections.
