Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is transmitted when blood, semen, or other body fluids from a person infected with the virus enters the body of someone who is uninfected. Hepatitis B can range from a mild, short-term, acute illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, long-term, chronic infection. The virus is highly infectious and is often spread through sexual contact, injection drug use, and from mother to child at birth.

Background:

Hepatitis B surface antigen is the coat protein of Hepatitis B virus, which is not infectious itself, but is often accompanied by the presence of Hepatitis B virus and is a sign of infection with Hepatitis B virus, usually appearing 1-2 weeks after infection. It is mainly transmitted through blood.
