Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a crucial enzyme involved in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and has multiple physiological roles. ACE2 is expressed in various human tissues and cell types, with the highest levels found in the small intestine, testis, kidneys, heart, thyroid, and adipose tissue. It contains an N-terminal peptidase domain with characteristics of M2 metalloproteases and a C-terminal domain that is related to collectrin, a regulator of renal amino acid transport.
