It is believed to be an endogenous, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory substance that is induced during bacterial infections and plays a significant role in regulating cytokine networks. PCT is an important diagnostic marker for detecting severe bacterial infections and a sensitive indicator for determining the type and activity of inflammation.
