Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase reactant predominantly produced by the liver, but also secreted by various other cells such as endothelial cells, monocytes, and smooth muscle cells. It is regulated by cytokines interleukin (IL)1, IL6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α. SAA is released in response to infection or injury and is altered by hepatic function and host nutritional status.
