Typhoid fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. The bacterium typically enters the body through ingestion of contaminated food or water, penetrates the intestinal wall, and multiplies in lymphoid tissue before entering the bloodstream and causing bacteremia. The disease is transmitted through the "4 Fs" (flies, fingers, feces, and fomites), highlighting its fecal-oral route of transmission.
